Default Rear-Wheel Bearings???

I have a '98 A4 2.8 that lately has been riding pretty rough. It's very loud now whenever I go anywhere. I basically sounds like it's not shifting, although it is - it just makes the noise like it's revving really loud. It's always loud, but it's at its worst when I'm travelling between 40 and 50 miles per hour.

I took it in today and they told me the right rear-wheel bearings need to be replaced. Does this sound right to you guys??

I just want to make sure before I pay to get it repaired. Thanks.

Wheel bearing noise is speed dependent. If it makes more noise when you turn left, it is a right bearing.

Is there any danger if I don't get that repaired right away?

its not something I would leave for a long time if the sound gets louder the faster your drive and it is a humming sound in the rear most likley a wheel bearing its pretty common on our cars

Stupid question - if I leave for another month or two, there's a chance it could damage the wheel further, but it couldn't get so bad it would fall off, could it?

eventually it could heat up enough it could cause some real damage depends how loud is it now ? if it just started then leaving it for a month would be fine as long as you are not doing crazy miles
