RE: the real question 1.8 - 2.8
if you plan on not modding at all, get a 2.8
if you plan on putting 2-3k in the motor, get a 1.8
if you plan on putting 4-5k in the motor, get a 2.8 and supercharge it...
these three options need to be a sticky, lol

RE: the real question 1.8 - 2.8
Sometimes I wish I had gotten the turbo version. I drove a stock turbo from the dealer as a loaner car for a day and although the power is not overly impressive, I can see how chipping etc and that turbo creating a lot more boost would be very addictive.
So the turbo would be fun to play with, but realisticly, I don't want to dump a ton of money into modding my car, so the 2.8 with its 'reliability' is better for me. For now I just can't bring myself to put a few thousand into a depreciating car.
Now in the future after I have a house and some money to play with, the turbo car is much more likely to be sitting in my driveway. Whether that is a newish A4 or a slightly older S4 is yet to be determined.

RE: the real question 1.8 - 2.8
huh... low 12's for $3500??? Lol, i really dont think so, unless you get hooked up on ebay parts and have stock suspension and stock rims, which i dont know any audi owner that "loves" stock wheels and stock suspension....
just for a decent k04 setup it costs about $2000 just for the turbo, correct software, and install... that doesnt include the $1000 turbo back exhaust you will need, or the $1000 fmic you will need, or the DV, air filter, gauges, etc...
no way will you see an audi go from a 16.5 to a 12.3 with $3500... MAYBE IF YOU HAVE AMAZING CONNECTIONS....AND THATS A BIG MAYBE..
the most "mod friendly" car is a turbo awdDSM, and for $3500 you can break into the high 11's, low 12's with one of those, and those things run a high 14 from the factory...

but you can score something on the classifieds on az and audiworld. theres powerfull setups going on for 1.5k and lower. you dont drive a 1.8 so dont talk.
200$ for a DIY intecooler and you can get a custom exaust for the BT.
still way cheaper than anything else. and yes you can ruck stock suspension, especially if its sport. i wouldnt want to, but you can.
anyway all this doenst have to be done at one time. the kit yes, but hte other stuff im sure that most people do somethign every few months or so.
and you should really go out and meet some more audi owners if you dont think they like "stock wheels"

RE: the real question 1.8 - 2.8
dude its more than $200 to do a custom intercooler, i do know its cheaper, but $200 is unrealisitic, piping is gonna be about $75-100 to have custom fab'd, and the core will be about $250-$350 on ebay, so if an audi tuner has the ***** to test out an ebay intercooler on a low 12 second setup than congrats if he can do it for $500...
and your gonna need a clutch, theres another $750...
seriously dude you need about $3500 in supporting mods, that does not include the turbo or exhaust..
its unrealistic to get a 1.8 in the low 12's for $3500, i guarantee most all the 1.8 owners on here will agree with me also...

I have a 2.8 mannual quattro and its great. Above 4500k rpm the engine has this muscley torquey growl - its fantastic.
only negative is that it guzzles gas under 'fast' but not insane city driving. I use just under 15L/ 100km !
You may as well get a 2.8 as well since it will probably have more options for pretty much the same price as a 1.8slow

RE: the real question 1.8 - 2.8
I have a 2.8 Tiptronic Quattro and love it... This is my first automatic vehicle which I am not tooo thrilled about, but I like having the ability to downshift the tiptronic to take a corner or curve with speed...
My last vehicle was a 89 Toyota Supra that was turbocharged... It was extremely fast (I modded the hell out of it) and I really do miss boost but I went for reliability when I was choosing a Audi... Turbo's go bad, its a fact, they die... I didnt want to have to deal with replacing a turbo, plus it is just another part that can go bad on the car...
Main reasons why I went with 2.8 over 1.8t... As stated before, turbo's die and is just another part to replace... I have no plans on modding this vehicle, I got that all out of my system with my last two cars so I am fine with keeping it stock... Since I wanted quattro I wanted more power due todrivetrain loss (since I planned on keeping the car stock)...
