Default Radiator Fan

2002 A4 1.8T- 82,000 miles

Just recently (w/in the past 2 weeks), when I start my car in the AM (around 50º outside) for the first time since the night before, the radiator fan kicks on and stays on for a while. The car seems to be running fine otherwise, not sure why the fan would be kicking on (interior dummy temp gauge reads fine).

Bad thermostat? Any other ideas?

I think purely out of coincidence my CEL came on for a daya few weeks ago- shut off the next day. No clue on that one.

All right. My diagnostic tool finally arrived and came up with the one code (2002 Audi A4 1.8t Quattro):

16502-P0118: Engine Coolant Temp. Circuit - G62:High.

I have no clue what the G62:High means but I'm assuming I have a temperature sensor issue which is causing the fan to come on. Does anybody have any experience or ways to narrow down this problem? The dummy gauge on the dash does not indicate high temp.

Probably unrelated, but yesterday for the first time my car would not start. After kicking it over and over again, I finally just floored it while turning it over. It sputtered, ran like garbage for a few seconds then ran 100%. Drove it 100+ miles since and it runs/starts fine.

Until this mornign when I started the car and heard a series of beeps coming from the rear, drivers side of the car (interior). Thats a first also and haven't been able to duplicate it- any ideas on that?

You need a new coolant temp sensor, its that simple.

It causes exactly the problems you described, and your getting a code.

Glad were here to help, but cmon, you could have got this one solo.........anyway, thats your issue.

Good Luck!

Don't worry acetrebo- I figured that out about 5 min after I posted it. I actually ran out at lunch and picked up the new sensor, o-ring, and retaining clip for a grand total of 30-something dollars.

Still don't know about the beeps though.

Not sure what the beeps are all about. Maybe the interior motion sensor or something?

Anyway, glad to hear you got her fixed!

Just replace the sensor and clear all the codes and you should be fine. Bad coolant temp sensor can cause all those symptoms (except beep).

That stupid @#$)%()$*@# sensor! It may only be about $30, but it took me about an hour and a half of swearing and bloody knuckles to put the stupid thing in. Sure you can see it, sure you can pull the wire clip off it, sure you can pull the old retaining clip off and pull the bad sensor out. But its virtually impossible to put the new clip on the new sensor. There is just no room in thereto do it. Anyway, I finally got it on and it seems to work just fine (after I erased the ECU code).
