Qusetion with chip num

Does anyone know/remember if you buy a chipped ecu if the numbers have to match from your old ecu or if its a complelty new ecu they dont have to match?

When I was looking into it they just took my VIN and determined compatibility from that. Hey, how's that K04 coming along?

you have to have your computer type, for my car there are like 6 different programs that are run based on what your set up is...
