Default quick timing belt Q??

So i haven't had a problem with the timing belt yet, and i have about 70k miles on my B6 A4 1.8Tq, question is, i want to do the project with my friend that is a master mechanic at a Ford Dealer, but he asked me if there are any special tools to do the work...the reason he asked is because when we cleaned out the MAF last weekend, he didn't have a 5 star bolt that was hollow in the middle, better yet he has never seen a 5 strar wrench in his life, it boggled both of us.... is there anyone with a bentley CD-rom or something that can get me the diagnostics of this belt and what special tools, if any are required?? i appreciate all your help and time,

TIA,

Joe

Start with year/engine that you have.

If its a 1.8t, you do need a star wrench, to remove the crank pulley bolts. Its similar to one you would use on break calipers,Its a size45torx bit that fits on a socket wrench.

TOOLS/SUPPLIES LIST:
Metric sockets: 10mm, 13mm, 14mm, 19mm (12 point).
Allen sockets: 5mm, 6mm, 8mm
Breaker bar
Torx sockets: T45, T30
Set of metric wrenches

The v6 needs a tool to hold the cams in place, or you can make something to do the job yourself.

The haynes manual is pretty good.
Heres a write up for you.

Your friend is a master mechanic and he has never seens a "safety torx" - lol , let me guess he got his degree through the mail?

ace got all the tools you need -

Buy a kit from ECS "ultimate timing belt kit" that includes water pump and all belts, tensioners, rollers that you will need to do the proper job - I also strongly recomend that you look into the crank and cam shaft seals - an extra 20 min and $20 and you will save your self from having to do the job over again, like I did after it developed a leak

well with me knowing a little more than the average Joe, and my buddy being a master mechanic for FORD...if you didnt read that before...there are alot of differences in a foreign car that an american made car...so i'd appreciate if you wouldn't try to be such a cool guy, or a mister know it all...we are here to help each other not rag on each other...all i asked for was some insight on the job soon at hand...thanks for all the serious responses anyways...

your ford buddy better have that security bit - I've seen it on dozens of Ford MAFs.

Removing, installing and tensioning toothed belt

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t
Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

t
2-hole pin wrench -3387-

t
Locking plate -T10008-

t
Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-

Removing

–
Move lock carrier to service position

–
Release quick fasteners -arrows- and remove engine cover panel.
Note

Before removing, mark direction of rotation of poly V-belt with chalk or felt-tipped pen. If the belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause breakage.

–
Turn the tensioner in the direction of the -arrow- to slacken the poly V-belt.

–
Remove poly V-belt.

–
Unscrew bolts -arrows- and remove poly V-belt tensioner.

–
Remove toothed belt cover (top).

Caution

The engine must only be turned at the crankshaft, in the direction of normal engine rotation (clockwise).

–
Rotate crankshaft to TDC by turning bolt for toothed belt sprocket.

l
Marking on camshaft sprocket and marking on crankshaft must be aligned to TDC -arrows-.

–
Unscrew vibration damper and remove.

–
Remove toothed belt cover (centre and bottom) -arrows-.

Caution

t
The toothed belt tensioner is oil-damped and can therefore only be compressed slowly by applying constant pressure.

t
To avoid damage, do not apply more force than necessary when compressing the toothed belt tensioner.

–
Applying constant and moderate force, use hexagon key to press toothed belt tensioner anti-clockwise in direction of -arrow- until piston of tensioner can be locked with locking plate -T10008-.

–
Insert locking plate -T10008- and make sure that it remains in place.
Note

Do not to bend limit stop -A- of eccentric adjuster.

–
To slacken toothed belt, loosen nut -1- on tensioning roller and turn eccentric adjuster clockwise -arrow- using 2-hole pin wrench -3387-.

–
Mark the rotation direction of toothed belt with chalk or a felt-tipped pen.

–
Remove toothed belt.

Installing (adjusting valve timing)
Note

t
Toothed belt adjustment is also to be performed as follows when carrying out repair work which only requires toothed belt to be removed from camshaft sprocket.

t
The crankshaft must not be at TDC at any cylinder when the camshaft is turned. Otherwise, there is a risk of damage to valves and piston crowns.

–
Fit toothed belt on crankshaft sprocket (note rotation direction).

–
Install lower toothed belt cover.
Note

The vibration damper/ pulley can only be installed in one position: the hole -arrow- in the vibration damper must fit over the projection on the toothed belt sprocket on the crankshaft.

–
Secure vibration damper/ pulley. Note positive location -arrow-.

–
Align markings on camshaft sprocket / cylinder head cover and markings on vibration damper / toothed belt cover -arrows-.

–
Make sure that toothed belt tensioner is still locked with locking plate -T10008-.

–
Fit toothed belt in the sequence: coolant pump, tensioning roller, camshaft sprocket.

Tensioning toothed belt
Note

Do not to bend limit stop -A- of eccentric adjuster.

–
Turn eccentric adjuster anti-clockwise onto stop in direction of -arrow- using 2-hole pin wrench -3387-.

–
Hold eccentric adjuster in this position and pull out locking plate -T10008-.

–
Turn eccentric adjuster clockwise in direction of -arrow- until gauge -2- with dimension -a-=8mm (e.g. drill bit) can be pulled through between tensioning lever and housing of tensioner.

–
Hold eccentric adjuster in this position and tighten nut -1- of tensioning roller to 27 Nm.

Caution

The engine must only be turned at the crankshaft, in the direction of normal engine rotation (clockwise).

–
Turn crankshaft two rotations via toothed belt sprocket bolt until it is positioned at TDC again.

l
Marking on camshaft sprocket and marking on crankshaft must be aligned to TDC -arrows-.

–
Use gauge -2- (e.g. drill bit) to check dimension -a- between tensioning lever and housing of tensioner.

l
Dimension -a- = 6...10 mm.

If dimension -a- is not attained:

Caution

–
Loosen nut -1- for tensioning roller.

–
Tension toothed belt.

When dimension -a- is achieved:

–
Fit centre and top section of toothed belt cover.

Assembling

Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

–
Install poly V-belt tensioner -arrows-.

–
Install poly V-belt

–
Install top section of toothed belt cover (make sure it engages securely on centre section of toothed belt cover).

–
Install lock carrier with attachments .

–
Allow stop for torque reaction support to rest on rubber buffer for torque reaction support under its own weight and tighten nuts -arrows-.

–
Install front bumper cover

–
Check headlight adjustment

You don't need that fancy tool in the pic... "3387" or whatever. Use an open end wrench... a big one, 1 1/4 or something is what I used. Worked like a charm!
