Question about ECU swapping.

RE: Question about ECU swapping.
Mk.... I just hope I get that chip. By the way, that station with 92 octane... they had a sign from the early 90's that still says 92, so the only choices I have are 91 or 100.
But seriously, this chip is pretty old... will I have any problems, Im paying a grip load for it.

RE: Question about ECU swapping.
100 octane will be too much (overkill and a waste of money). 91 will be OK - just make sure you get it from a reputable dealer and refinery like Mobil, Exxon, etc. Don't save money on fuel because "Joe's Fuel" down the street will save you 8 cents per gallon. It's usually crap fuel with poor refinement and without proper additives.
If you're paying alot for the ecu, I'd be cautious. I've heard of plenty of people selling ecu's for more (and there are people willing to pay that much) and the ecu's were fine, but I think it's wrong to pay alot for a used ecu. I don't agree with the, "Ecu's are pieces of electronic equipment; nothing degrades and therefore they shoouldn't be discounted" argument. If that's the case, then I'll spend the extra bucks on the original tuner and get a new unit.

RE: Question about ECU swapping.
My reason for finding a used one is because I can have a spare if anything were to go wrong. When I say its alot, I guess its more desirable since my AUDI is DRIVE BY WIRE and that boosts the price up a grip load.
Ive seen APR chips with ECU's for PRE 2000 for about 400... This one is already up to $600. It is cheaper than a normal chip including install... and I get a spare ECU.
My only problem is that the seller is an *** and wont respond to me. I mean, the chip could be $600 but he might be a bitch and charge alot for shipping. Its all up in the air... it only has a day on it, so we will see how things go.

WARNING WILL ROBINSON! DANGER! DANGER!
At 600 plus shipping, I'd pass, especially if the seller is being an *** before the sale. Imagine what will happen if something goes wrong after he has sold it to you.
For 500 or so, you can get your current ECU chipped rather than buy something used.
The new chip will come with support, possible upgrades and a warantee.

RE: Question about ECU swapping.
Damn, that high of octane is worthless unless you have very advanced timing or extremely high compression. Otherwise you're just wasting money. I see guys putting 92 or 91 in their pickups and the only benefit may be from the added cleaning agents in the fuel. I use 91 in my CUDA because I've advanced the timing to the point that it will detonate on anything less. If not for that I'd be running 87.
