Hey I have 98' A4 2.8 quattro 5 speed. And the temp sensor intermittently works then doesn't work. Sometimes it goes1/4 way up, but sometimes it works and most of the time it doesn't work.And the mph gauge generally starts at about 120mph and kind of works from there. I replaced the vehicle speed sensor at the differential but problem is not fixed. Also the sunroof is sometimes possessed and opens and closes on its own. freaks me out sometimes. any one ever had same or similar problems before. input greatly appreciated.

 

You mean your temp gauge right? Your temp sensor is in the engine bay. Are you talking coolant or oil temp? If your coolant temp "sensor" was bad you would probably have trouble starting the car, with flooding accompanied by the smell of rich exhaust. The prob could be your coolant thermometer (housed in the coolant pump). If thats the case it needs to be replaced.

Since your speedo is also screwed, I am thinking its morelikely that you have a defective gauge cluster. Can you get access to a VAGCOM and see if you have any codes being thrown?

The possessed sunroof is a common problem - its a dirty/old dial switch. Mine used to do it last year but stopped and hasnt done it for about a year now. it may go away or you may have to replace/clean the switch.<edited><editID>brrman</editID><editDate>38022.6277893518</editDate></edited>

That is so ghetto!!! I just picked mine up last week and it's doing the same thing. The sunroof is possessed and the oil temperature works 1 out of 20 times I start the car! Ghetto *** rebadged VOLKSWAGEN! Any suggestions?
