Preferred gear shift MPH/RPM for up shifting/downshifting
Hey guys,
I was just wondering at what MPH/RPM's everyone up shifts/downshifts. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Please post by answering the following:

RE: Preferred gear shift MPH/RPM for up shifting/downshifting
How about this: When flat-out accelerating, I shift before 6000rpm, because the tiny stock turbo is done by then. When normally accelerating, I upshift by 3500rpm or so. Downshifting to pass or accelerate after negotiating a corner, I usually try to keep the engine between 3200-4000, because that's where the torque peaks, and therefore when my car is pulling the hardest. When I'm passing, I usually put my foot in it for 2 seconds before to get the turbo to spool up. Also, I try to keep cruising RPM over about 2200 or so.
Sorry this isn't as categorical as you asked for, but it should really answer all of your questions.

If you have a boost gauge (which you really should) then you would know that boost drops alot after 5,000 rpms. Powerband is approx. 3400-5000 rpms. (on a chipped/stock k03)

1.8 Quattro
About everytime at 3500rpm.
In downshift, I do :
5th-4th-3rd-neutral or
4th-3rd-neutral or
3rd-neutral
sometime 4th-neutral, is it bad for the engine/transmission ?

Its not bad for it, its better to have to buy new brake pads than to buy a new clutch

Model: 2001.5 1.8T (B5)
Drivetrain: Quattro
(## MPH or RPMs - Please note)
Accelleration:
1st to 2nd: 2800 RPMs (If I'm in a parking lot or something slow, I stick to 1st until I get over 20mph)
2nd to 3rd: 3000 RPMs
3rd to 4th: 3000 RPMs
4th to 5th: 3000 RPMs
Passing:
5th - 4th: 70-80 MPH
4th - 3rd: UNK
3rd - 2nd: UNK
2nd - 1st: N/A
Entering a Curve (or other decelleration situations):
I don't really pay attention, but I downshift as needed to keep my RPMs between 2200 and 3000. I downshift to 2nd when I am entering a 90 degree turn (left or right)
When I am pushing it, I will shift around 5500 RPMs; and when I am baiting someone for a little fun, I tend to shift 1st and 2nd at 4500 RPMs and all others at around 4000 RPMs.
ETA: I also shift up one gear once I reach the speed limit (or as fast as I am going) so long as it will keep me over 1.5k RPMs

RE: Preferred gear shift MPH/RPM for up shifting/downshifting
i remember reading a top speed article in a honda magazine and they said that it wasn't good to leave it in nuetral instead of downshifting, cause the wheels are still spinning the tranny, they didn't go into detail, but ever since i just leave it in gear until the rpms get close to idle(around 1500 to 2000)unless im in spirited mood then i just downshift
