Just for the record, I usually change about 4500-5k. It usually looks fairly clean up until around then.

I once owned a BMW 740il and it had the indicator for oil change and service. I used it as an indicator to change the oil. I'm NOT a psychotic oil changer. I refuse to fall in to the trap of 3K changes that too many people have. Those changes go back to leaded gasoline and older types of lubes. Todays oils are far superior in their properties and will stand up to longer changes. Manufacturers use 7500 miles as their own requirements and they offer 100,000 mile warranties at the same time. I won't listen to the "they want the engines to fail" lines of BS that too many people seem to lean on. I'd like to see the statistics that prove that poor oil change habits result in premature engine failure. Most engines fail for reasons not directly related to change frequency. And the color of the oil is also a poor determinant. I remember Castrol being an oil that turned black inside of 1000 miles when Kendal stayed honey gold right to the end.
