RE: Oil Change 12Valve
if you're changing the oil you can use a different weight. i believe audi recommends 0w40 for the 12v, but it might be 5w40...i've got high mileage and my car eats up 0w40 like water, so i decided to go with some royal purple 20w50. no more oil consumption problems

RE: Oil Change 12Valve
its the weight of the oil and to say it simply the colder the temp outside the light the oil as for yours, check the owners manual, it will have a rundown of the diff weights and temp ranges. get the one that matches the season.

It depends on where you live and how cold it gets in the winter.
Most automakers recommend 5W-30 on most of their late model cars, but VW engines tend to require a slightly heavier oil. You cannot go wrong with a 5W-40 or 0W-40, but all of these are synthetic and may be overkill for the SOHC 2.8. (These oils are MANDATORY in the 1.8T sludgemonster, and I use Mobil 1 0W-40 year-round in the Passat 1.8T, with the biggest oil filter I can cram between the adaptor and the left engine mount.)
I live in weather wimp coastal southern California. My 1996 Audi 2.8 occasionally rattles on cold starts with 10W-40 Castrol GTX, but I am currently running a course of Auto-RX, so I cannot prove that a 10W-X is too heavy for winter use. My current thinking is 10W-40 dino in the summer and 5W-30 dino in the winter, on a 6 month or 3k mi = 5k km OCI, for city driving. Alternatively, I could probably double the OCI with an XW-40 synthetic. (The only difference between a 0W-40 and a 5W-40 oil would become apparent in a northern Canada winter cold start.)
