i should have said pre-ignition instead of pre-detonation

it is it's ability to resist PRE-detonation,not detonation.pre detonation happens when friction of gasses being compressed causes it to blow up BEFORE the spark ignites it.it will still detonate like normal when the spark ignites it.

ohhh, you would not beleive how much science is behind all that.
anyway, this things, the octane boosters are nothing but ethanol. You can make YOUR OWN ethanol, just search how. There is expensive way through the chemical process, or there is a bit cheaper through boiling. Any old crap as food, bear, vegies , sugar can be converted to the burning ethanol.
By adding it to the gas you increase the octane rating, its simple as this.
The ethanol contains a huge amount of energy and IS considered renuible source of energy, as oil (vegy oil).
You can actually save a lot of cash just by fueling regular and adding ethanol home maid.
It is true, ethanol does burn valves, just becouse the octane rating is so high that when the exaust valve open the mix is still burning hot.
OCTANE rating, not only shows the resestivity to knocking but the speed of burn, as higher it gets the slower it burns, but with more energy. by formula W=F x d. It produces less force F but it works a lot longer d, thats why work W is higer.
our engines considered tuned for high octane.
