If you dont have a laptop, any OBDII compliant reader will read the trouble codes and allow you to clear them.
Its a standard interface so any OBDII will work, for any car 1996 or newer.
If you do have a laptop, get the vag-com interface and software, it has addidtional features for Audi/VW.

cheap and cheerful and does the lot, Reads and erases Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) of Engine, ABS, Airbags and Automatic Transmission.

Depends on what you intend to do. Any generic code scanner will be best cost-wise if scanning for codes is all you want. Vag Com is best if you want that capability on top of many other diagnostic features.
