NEWBIE OIL TEMP PROBLEM
HEY GUYS,
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 1997 2.8 QUATTRO AND ITS A LOVELY CAR. JUST HAD THE LOWER WISHBONE REPLACED WHICH I BELIEVE CAN BE A PROB WITH THESE CARS.
HOPING YOU GUYS COULD ADVISE ME WITH ANOTHER PROB I'VE NOTICED,
DRIVING BACK FROM HEATHROW T'OTHER DAY AND I NOTICED THE OIL TEMP GAUGE HAD GONE RIGHT TO THE END OF THE GAUGE. (IE. OVER 180 DEGREES CELSIUS!)
STRANGE THING IS THE CAR WAS DRIVING SWEET AS A NUT! I PULLED OVER AT THE NEXT SERVICES AND OPENED THE BONNET AND ALL SEEMED FINE, OBVIOUSLY THE ENGINE WAS QUITE HOT BUT I'D BEEN DRIVING FOR 3 HOURS. TO BE SAFE I LEFT IT 10 MINS THEN DROVE ON AND ABOUT AN HOUR LATER THE GAUGE WENT BACK DOWN TO ABOUT 70 DEGREES WHICH SEEMED A LOT MORE PLAUSIBLE AND THE CAR CONTINUED TO DRIVE PERFECTLY ALL THE WAY HOME.
SURELY IF THE OIL TEMP WAS REALLY OVER 180 DEGREES THE CAR WOULD BE SHOWING SIGNS? AND IT WOULDN'T COOL DOWN AS QUICKLY AS IT DID? WOULD IT JUST BE THE SENSOR?
THANKS IN ADVANCE GUYS,
PETE

But in all seriousness, is there any blue smoke coming out of the tail when it happens??? That would be one of the first things to look for.

I would do an oil change just to be safe, just in case you got a clogged filter or something... use synthetic so if it does become a problem it wont roast in the motor as easily, and you will risk less damage if it happens again.

RE: NEWBIE OIL TEMP PROBLEM
Massive thanks for all your help guys. Think I'll book her in for an oil service and get the oil temp sensor/sender changed at the same time.
Is the oil temp sender a common problem with A4's?
