need some info on chips...
hey guys,
I'm starting to look into a chip for my '05 A4 1.8T Quattro. After browsing the boards for the last week and learning what i can about chips, i've noticed there is alot more that goes into them than just a 'chip'. I want to go with an untraceable one like the Revo to save my warranty but i know there are other untraceable's out there. So what chip do you guys reccomend and what else do i need? I'm going to go with an exhaust first so right now i'm just thinking a bit ahead of time and trying to get some more research on chips before diving in and buying one. Anyway please let me know some good chips that aren't going to burn a hole in my wallet but of course are reliable and provide nice performance.

RE: need some info on chips...
every chip upgrade can be traceable by the dealer, it is so simple to do with the correct software, but there is another way to keep your warranty:
1.- download the original software to a laptop
2.- chip you car with the new program
then if something goes wrong, updload the original software to the ecu and take it to the dealer
this only works with apr software

Are you sure, I always thought it was completly untraceable, even to a vag.

you can get a GIAC swappable chip, you just swap for the stock chip when you take it into the dealer, i just took my car in for the 15k checkup w/my GIAC chip installed and they said nothing, you can't see the difference between the chips, only that they are working, if it were some major engine work or something big i would put the stock chip back in and if you have the VAG-COM software you can clear your computer, because when it is unpluged it throws a code that the dealers see and the VAG-COM software on your laptop will clear that code.

ok, computers and systems are my business, if you connect your ecu to a linux computer you can see the ecu like a memory stick atached to your computer (the computer program is an .txt file created in unix based systems (siemens)), then you can copy all the info to your hard disk... then you can use the usb port with a windows pc to put the apr software in the backuped ecu, off course the dealer can see if your computer is chipped, they plug a turbo psi tester in the car and they will see an out of range psi in the turbo, that is the way... in mexico there is a lot of warranty refuse in this case... they use this simple way to check if your ecu is not with the original parameters.

which is why it is always suggested to switch ecu's, chips, or programs before going to the dealer before service.
Its not a foolproof way to prove being chipped though. A guy on AW was just complaining that the dealer refused him warranty work on his dying turbo because they said his car was boosting at high levels. His car was bone stock. A k03 turbo can overboost because of certain problems relating to the N75 valve or the wastegate.

yeah that was also my concern mccracing.... i noticed that with APR you have to send in your ECU to get it chipped. I guess its obviously worth it but i was also wondering if any companies dont require you to send it the ECU.
