yea it could cuz ther mani would heat up and it can close off the leak, our 200 does it all the damn time, higher rpms sounds just find but a funky noise at idle and just above
ORIGINAL: quiktsi

If it was an exhaust leak it would not go away at higher rpms.

What do you guys think?

Do the timing belt and check the camshaft position sensor and hope for the best?

How can I tell if there is valve damage?

I doubt your valves are f'd. You car would be unlikely to run.

Noises are hard to diagnose over the internet. If you can't figure it out when you are listening to your car, it is hard for us to figure out just reading words.

Do a compression test, do your timing belt and water pump as it is time. Try to figure out where the noise is coming from.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the re-assurance.

The engine does still run.

I am going to do timing belt kit (water pump, all accessory belts), and the Camshaft position sensor.

I will let you all know the outcome. I am shooting for wednesday to have it done.

Any tips on timing belt job? I have read the write-up on audiworld, it think I can handle it OK. Just looking for any tips that may not be in the writeup that may help me do the job.

What in your experience would have helped had you known about it at the start of the t-belt job?

Thanks!
