RE: my oil temp gauge doesn't seem to do much... help
as far as i know the oil pressure light doesn't indicate a low oil level, so that if you happen to have leak or something like that you might not get a warning until your oil all leaks out or a certain level that the oil pump cannot maintain the certain pressure where your engine might seize after a couple seconds in normal operating rpm range. so that never trust your oil light, check your oil level at least once in 2 weeks or whenever you fill up your tank (as the manual recommends), or oil temp gauge might be a good indication of low oil level since it is harder to cool more circulating oil than a normal level of oil.

I live in southern cali... where it is not very cold and my oil temp gauge still does not exceed 160..... why? the oil level is fine.....

if you upgrade your engine performance then you need to take note of other requirement, the light is a nice thing for any car ( either ok or dead ) but a gauge like a vacuum gauge is more precise and digital is best.
personal choice only though

I've often wondered why audi went to the trouble of having an oil temperature gauge, but not an oil pressure gauge. it just seems to me that although oil temperature is an important thing to consider, oil pressure is of more immediate importance to the average driver. I think it would have made more sense to have an oil pressure gauge in the bottom left corner where the oil temp gauge is, and have a warning light for high oil temperature.
but then we all know that audi doesn't always do things the logical way.
