Default My engine is hunting??

Hi chaps,
My 1996 1.8 20v engine hunts at idle speed. This only lasts a few seconds then it'll sort itself out. Does anybody know what causes this?
Thanks
Tom

Sorry... not familiar with the term "hunt". Do you mean that it floats around a bit?

Normally hunting means "gear hunting". However, its hard to be gear hunting when you are at idle.

Can you explain what you mean, Audi1978? ARe you talking about a rough idle?

I know... that's why I was confused. But I think he means rough idle.

Sorry chaps, what i mean is that when idling the revs fluctuate between 950 rpm and 450 rmp. This will happen for about 5 seconds until it'll smooth itself out...
Cheers

You have 2 o2 sensors - you would need a VAG com to get them checked.

I'm also having the same problem on my 98.5 1.6SE. I have Vag-Com and it states an intermittent fault with O2 sensor. Where are they fitted? I'm assuming they are different to the Lamda sensor on the exhaust downpipe? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Frankie.
