Default Mass air flow

How often do these go bad? anyone know? I was told by the stealership that it has gone bad.
Car has 155k on it now. some people say to take it out and clean it, but i did and it looked like it was brand new?
Do the internals go bad eventually? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ive been getting lean codes on the CEL and they say thats the problem.
p1128 and p1136

98 1.8t is what i have.

go to radio shack and get a electronic cleaner and try to clean it.

if you have cai then it's easier to go bad. you can get remanifactured maf from ecstuning.com it's cheaper.

you might have some peoblem with your fuel parts or 02 sensor.

all i have is a K&N filter. but the insides of the MAF are spotless.
Could the O2 sensors throw this off as well???

P1128 | Long Term Fuel Trim mult.,Bank1 System too Lean
P1136 | Long Term Fuel Trim Add.Fuel,Bank1 System too Lean

if you know any other audi guy, swap the sensors and try it. it's a expensive part. you should make sure that it's the problem before you buy.

dont forget, there is no return or exchange on MAF.

it chould be your fuel filter too.

i just replaced the fuel filter. the fuel pump went bad and ever since audi replaced, the car runs like crap. but they say the pressure is good on the new pump. god i hate the stealership. ecs has a rebuilt maf for 150. i might buy and if thats not it, put it back on ebay or something. i might just replace the O2 as well since i just got my downpipe.

would a air leak in the exhaust cause the problem? or maybe a messed up cat?

My mass air flow went bad and the CATS went bad at the same time. Both were covered by warranty. If you let them go bad, it's like a chain reaction with your exhaust though. The O2's will eventually go bad as well. If you search, you can find what codes I posted when mine went bad. It was a bank 1 and 2 system too lean code though.

yes it would, have you considered opening the MAF and replacing the resistors (that's what the dealers do) they are only soldered on you know
