Default Lower control arm detached...Is that bad?

I just got an oil change on my 97 A4 2.8 FWD. While it was there I climbed under to check it out, when ever I bring it in i always take advantage of the great view. While i was under there i noticed that some bracket (triangular(ish) with two bolt holes) that bolts right into the chassis. I believe it is a mounting bracet to the lower control arm. I have had a this clunking sound comming from that wheel that i though was a messed up clutch. Anyone know what sort of damage may have been done from this not being bolted in, as far as i know it's been missing since before i bought the car, 2 months ago. Thanks!

That can't be a good thing. It must have been rattling pretty good if it was just hanging off. I don't know how much damage it would do, but it may have overstressed your other control arm joints or tie rod end joint. That could lead to them wearing out sooner perhaps.
