LOOKING TO BUY A USED 2003 A4!
Hi,
I am a proud owner of a 2001 A4 2.8. However, I would like toupgrade my car to a B6 2003 A4. I am having a hard time debating between the1.8 and the 3.0 engines. Any suggestions? What should I look for when buying the car and what are common problems?
Thanks.

RE: LOOKING TO BUY A USED 2003 A4!
I just recently upgraded to a 2003 from a 1999.5, I test drove several cars before I ended up choosing a 3.0. If you are on the fence about whether to get a 1.8 or a 3.0, it pretty much depends on what you want to get from your car. There are almost no mods you can do with the 3.0 engine, but there are several options for the 1.8. When I was test driving the 1.8s, the salesman from the dealership was telling me the benefits of chipping the cars. You can add significant horsepower with a chip and you will get better gas mileage. The saleman said that he heardabout 2003 1.8 was chipped to put outnearly 500 horsepower. It seemed like he was feeding a bunch of BS, but I don't know much about chipping cars.
After driving a couple 1.8's, I test drove a couple 3.0's. I found that the 3.0's drive much smoother then 1.8's and there is reduced engine noise in the cabin. I don't have much time to modify a car, so I just choose to go with the larger engine. You might find that your 01 2.8 has a smoother ride then a 03 1.8. I thought my 99.5 2.8 rode smoother then a 03 1.8 and I think that the additional weight of the larger engine had something to do with it.
Out of the several cars that I test drove, the 3.0's had better options then the 1.8's. The 1.8's that I test drove didn't have bose or xenon and they only had power seats on the drivers side. There were numerous little options that may not be of importance to you, but are options that I wanted.
I ended up going with a certified 2003 3.0 6 speed with 31,300 miles for $22,290. I've had the car for just more then a month now and love it. I haven't had any problems with it and enjoy this car more then 1999.5 2.8 5 speed.
That is just my experience, good luck with your new purchase.
