Default instrument cluster problems

I went to the dealer today b/c i can't c my dash computor screen in my 1999 a4 and they said i need to replace the ENTIRE GAUGE CLUSTER. They want $480 just for the dash and thats with the trade in of my old one. Does anyone know how to fix the screen on my dash so i can c it when it is sunny out? Or. where i could buy a gauge cluster (stock replacment) on the internet for cheaper?

There is virtually no way to do that. I've had my cluster out and disassembled before. The screen is soldered in there really good. The normal course of action is total replacement. You can get a used cluster from an auto dismantler. (car-part.com). You can also get a better deal on the cluster from impexfap.com. If you get a used cluster you are not running into "illegal territory". If you buy a new one, the dealer is able to set the exact mileage for you. This is VERY common problem with the stupid screens!

From what I have heard there is no cheap solution to the display. That price is accurate.
