You don't need to remove the pinch bolt to install shocks and springs on the B5 A4. I've done so many now that I think I can install a whole set in about2.5-3hours.
This is how I do an install on a quattro:
After you have the car jacked up and the wheel removed, open the hood and remove the two plastic plugs over the wheel wells. You can see them in the Audiworld write up. They are located in the area with the cabin air filter/battery/ecu. Loosen the nuts that are under the caps--almost all the way leave the nut just barely on.
Now move to the bottom of the shock. Disconnect the Sway bar from the sway bar link (both sides) and pull it down (just an inch or two) so that it sits below the sway bar link. Now remove the bolt connecting the shock to the lower control arm. Once this bolt is out, push down on the hub and pull the shock out so that the fork is free of the control arm.
Now back up to the engine bay. Finish removing the nuts that you loosened earlier. Be careful as you remove the second nut because the shock will fall out an hit the side of the car or land on your foot or smack you in the shin (none of which is a pleasant experience). I'm tall and have long arms,so I can hold the shock with one hand and remove the nut with the other. It's easier if you have someone help.
