Default Installing a Boost Gauge...

I actually had 2 people ask me about my boost gauge install today, and since I spent a little time writing it up, I figured I'd post it here in case someone else was curious... here ya go.

Wiring depends on if you have a mechanical or an electric gauge. Mine is mechanical (about 40$), which means its activation comes from an actual vacuum hose pressure thats attached and then "T"ed into my vacuum system. An electrical gauge is more expensive (couple hundred$) and relies on a wired signal sent from the engine.

For a mechanical gauge you only need run power to the backlight. An electrical gauge needs to be wired for power just to function. Unfortunately I have never done an electrical gauge install, so I can't help you there.

But for a mechanical, the install is relatively simple. The back of the gauge has 2 posts from the lightbulb that you wire down to either the fusebox or the powerpost that sits behind the knee bolster of the lower dash. Myself, I wired it to a fuse that only has power when the ignition is on.

The vacuum hose is pretty easy too, though its nerve-racking cutting it! I replaced all my old hose with silicon hose when I did my gauge install (http://www.hosetechniques.com).

You can see that I "T"ed the line in the front of the engine (not theline in the rear from the fuel pressure regulator). The line I cut into is theone that leads down from the engine head to the BPV.My new line to the gauge runs up the engine block, back around the firewall and into the ECU box (I drilled a small hole in the grommet). From there the hose becomes hard nylon (comes with the gauge normally) and runs up through the dash and into the vent where it connects to the gauge.

Now, the HARDEST part, was drilling the dang hole in the vent. You really need a bench-vise to hold it in place while you drill it, or better yet a drill press. My hole is not perfect (no jokes there please), but the imperfections don't stick out.

So, now that I have rambled on forever, I hope you have an idea of what it takes to install it.
