Incorrect vehicle speed sensor on 98?
Me and my friend are trying to replace the VSS on his 98 A4. It's got the 2.8 w/manual. The sensor that we got from the parts store seems about an inch too long. The old sensor which we pulled out was the same kind and obviously wrecked from riding up against the axle. This is the only sensor listed that the store found for the car. Does anyone know the part number of the correct sensor we might need or where we might be able to find one?

For a non quattro with later series 98 year vin number I show the front should be 8D0927803 and the rear one is 8E0927807C. You might have a miss-boxed unit. I just checked and the early 98 year also uses those same two part numbers. I didn't have them in stock to compare length. Which end of the car are you working on, and did the company use a part number system like the Audi OEM system?

I've received sensors from napa and worldpac which is the supplier for most german parts in Vancouver and I received the same sensor from two diff. manufacturers. They both have the same OE part number of 012-409-191D. Its the sensor located on the front transaxle right by the drive shaft for the LF wheel. I think I'm going to try the dealership tomorrow.

I just realized I was thinking speed sensor as in abs, my fault on that. I found this information on vehicle speed sensor, measures mph so now I'm on the same page as you. 012-409-191-D fits the 1.8 and 2.8 cars with 5sp manual trans and should use one o ring for a seal. 01F-409-191 fits auto trans cars with 1.8 and 2.8 engines and should have 2 o rings and black sensor for color. Sorry for my earlier mistake on the parts quote. Jeff.
