Default Inaccurate Fuel Gauge?

Every time I turn my car off with about a quarter tank left, I come back to it the next day and its at empty with the gas symbol in the DIS and says I have about 5 miles left in the tank. I go fill it up at the gas station and it only takes around 13-13.5 gallons. And once I restart the car after leaving the gas station it says I have 3/4 of a full tank and it takes a little while for it to show full. Something go bad? What could it be?

I have the same problem, I just deal with it because I don't know what it is.

faulty or worn sender unit in the tank, a common problem to those who only put a little in the tank and that part wears out ( its a wound coil very old system ) its a resistance thing, the slow rising needle is common

There is a tech article somewhere here on how to fix it - seems pretty straightforward (other than getting the big locking nut off - supposed to be a PITA). I have to do this too - my gauge will drop to empty and the low fuel light comes on, pretty much randomly once I get down to half a tank. Search out "fuel gauge problem" or something like that and it'll come up.

yup same thing here, the guage randomly drops on its own and then shoots back up once I get below a half tank
