Hmmm. i just put in 4.2 or whatever quaRTS. what the book suggested. and it just just at the top
and that is after using a smaller K&N oil filter than the OEM audi one

is that bad that the new one is smaller? it fits correctly and its ment to work with this engine

Made me think of my Audi.

4 quarts is too much. Mine always tops out just short of 3.7 quarts, and yes I have some sludge but your going to be high with a full 4.

incidently, how high is the oil? Like really high or just over the mark?
Its hard to say what is "really high." But like I said, I drained almost a quart when the dealership changed it, and it seems about the same mark as before...

I've had the same problem on some other cars, but not my Audi.
How did you determine the dipstick was reading wrong? Same case, and was it this far off?

Yes, it was substantially off. On my '93 Mustang, I'd say 3/8 to 1/2 inch over the fill mark. When I asked around, I was told go by the manufacturers specs, not the dipstick. I never noticed any windage at higher RPMs, or blue smoke out the tailpipe, so I figured I was o.k. I had the same problem with a couple of older cars.
