Thats some awful numbers! A little worrying to be honest. While I can't give info for a full tank, I can give you results for my driving for the past week.

Week 1 - Purely city driving. Seemed like I was stopping at every light. I had gone 200 miles on a little over half a tank. The trip computer for that alone was recording around 20mpg. That was Shell 93. It took 10.4 gallons to fill her back up.

Week 2 - Started journey with a full tank again, Shell 93. Drove 230 miles highway only. The fuel gauge was still over half, and the trip computer said my average for the journey there was 28.3mpg. Coming home, I filled up again, although probably could have made it back. Home I averaged 27.2mpg according to the trip, and once again had a little more than half a tank left with 230 miles.

My future driving will be 80 highway / 20 city. If I can stay around 25mpg average then I will be OK, but lower than that this will be expensive due to the number of miles I drive.

Last tank... 420 miles on a full tank- mostly highway miles.
This tank... 187 miles and3/8 tank left- mostly city miles.

 

I can get a little under 130 miles on a quarter tank in my 99 1.8tqm. That's driving very conservatively on Sunoco 260 GT. On regular gas 93 octane gas, it's about 115 miles. I've never really found out how far I can go on a tank because I usually fill up at a quarter.

 

wow. how do you guys get such good mileage?

i have a 99 a4 2.8 quattro on my last tank of gas i probably got 220 miles.
right now, im at 3/4 tank and have only gone 70 miles?

What should I do? its a 16 gallon tank and at my rate tahts 280
so 280/16 is still just 17.5 mpg. id say half city half highway.

does the type of gas make a big difference? 87 to 89 to 91 to 92/3?

what else should i do?
i just got the a4 two weeks ago.

 

I've gotten 410 once from all highway driving (a little trip I took) but on average about 330-350...usaually fill up when the gas light comes on says it has 40 miles left in tank... I drive a 2003 a4 1.8 tq

I have a friend with the same exact car just in black. I drive pretty hard city miles where I'm practically wind-sprinting b/w clients. He commutes to the city and spends massive highway miles b/w his house and his girl's house. I'm happy to get 380 miles to a tank on Shell 93 (this was stated previously), he'll get 420-520 on his highway traveling on the same octane.
Difference being I'm doing a LOT of cornering and he's doing a lot of straight away driving with very little stop and go. Although he admits the 520 has only happened twice, it should be noted that driving style plays a major factor.
Lastly, he bought his car 4 months before me and he's put almost 3 times the miles. I have about 12k on my car and he has about 33k. Perhaps his engine is slightly more broken in?
And a question to those who know better: Is there a sweet spot in mpg for an engine?--meaning is it less efficient early and late in its life and more efficient in its middle years?

A4 1.9TDi (110PS) 1997. I've done 315 miles on half atank of Diesel (since I last filled up). This is my first full tank as only bought the car 2 weeks ago but looking around 600 miles for one tank. This is combined motorway and town driving.
