Default How do you completely drain the transmission?

I want to change the transmission fluid on my 99.5 1.8T tip. I want to drain it completely. What would be the best way?

Is it, from cold engine (so most transmission fluid at the bottom of the transmission),

1. Drain as much as you can through drain plug
2. Drop pan, more will come out
3. Drain from cooling lines that go to the radiator
4. remove filter

Will thatget all of it out so I can fill the transmission from empty with the specified "from dry" quantity? How much do I need?

Then put filter and pan with a new gasket back on and fill from dry?

I know the first link for the passat however, the quantities are not very clear on that one as he talks about a factory mistake in filling up the transmission.

The second link is for an A8 and although the procedure is probably similar, the transmission is different. Mine is the 01V transmission.[/align]

Ya just get 8 qts and that will do it and make sure its the good pentosin stuff, nothing else that is different or "equivilent." I followed those articles when i did mine. I used about 7.5 qts.

Damn, I just noticed you have to have the engine running while you change the fluid. I don't feel safe doing it on jacktands.

I also forgot to order drain plug and fill plug seals. Where can I get those online? What is a good online source for the fluid?

I wouldnt worry about not trusting jack stands.. they are sturdy enough and if youre still worried, use extra jacks for "insurance" I reused my drain/fill plugs/seals and they arent leaking. You only have to run the engine when filling up the tranny which takes maybe 10 mins and have someone inside the car to shift through the gears while your doing that.

why would you want to drain your auto trans fluid?

audi states very clearly that it is a lifetime fluid. and to never be changed

haha come on man... no fluid retains its lubricating properties for a "lifetime". When i took my fluid out at 83k miles it was so burnt up and black and its consistancy was like water... shifts are much smoother now.

Because it has the color of a pencil head. The car has 100K miles on it. It needs to be changed.
