HELP...rodents eating wires!!!

RE: HELP...rodents eating wires!!!
I've not seen the location of the oil pressure sending unit, so I speak with no authority here, but on every other car I've ever seen, the oil pressure sending unit could be replaced in maybe 15 minutes. Splice a new section of wire on it? Maybe another 15 minutes if you stop for coffee. You specifically said the rat/mouse/hamster/stone marten or whatever chewed thru the sending unit AND the wire?? I can hardly picture a rodent of any kind chewing up a mechanical component like a sending unit.
You DID ask for your old parts back, didn't you? I certainly hope so. I personally wouldn't have left the dealership without my old "chewed up" parts.
..... chewed thru the oil pressure sending unit and wire.

RE: HELP...rodents eating wires!!!
This same issue happened to me here in Denver, apparently it is quite common with all the damn rabbits out at the airport. The unit is near the oil pan which is warm and that is why the rabbits like to chill under it. My mechanic put a steel braided line around the wiring when he replace it. Problem solved.

RE: HELP...rodents eating wires!!!
this thread is as old as dirt.... well, damn near
but staying on topic with it anyways, My friends grandma was having transmission trouble with her 02 Impala, and so she bought a new transmission to replace it. When My friends uncle and I went to replace it we put it up on the lift, and quickly saw "bedding" i.e. chewed up newspapers and what not. After cleaning all the bedding off the topside of the transmission, we saw 2 wires basically completely gnawed through, we cut them, spliced them, and brought the new tranny back for a refund... turns out mice had chewed through the wires. It was a headache to diagnose (used scan tools), and once we'd clear the code, it'd be fine for a week or so, and then come back. It had something to do with the lock-up switch if I remember correctly, so it was causing all sorts of trouble for her.
So in theory, I could see it happening, but 2 times in a month?! not very likely. haha, i'd have put a can of tuna with rat poison in it on top of my skidplate.... cheap, and easy deterrent, although you'd have to remember to remove the carcass before driving, or it might smell a little.

RE: HELP...rodents eating wires!!!
even tho this is an old thread- this stuff happens w/ cars that sit for awhile. rats make nests and chew up engine bays all the time. Imagine what it looks like when someone starts the car up after a rat decides to nest in the fan blades!
