help! mpg off the chart
Hi all im a newbie here, and I did a search but wasnt successful. I just bought a 02' A4 1.8tq from the dealer yesterday and after a bit of driving that day the computer between the gauges started to go crazy. The computer was reading the mpg erratically, it read from 18mpg to 120mpg then it read "--- mpg" then 65mpg etc. I was wondering if anyone knew why this was happening and if anyone knew how to resolve this issue? I appreciate your help thanks!

Haha, yeah, the instantanious readings can be pretty crazy... Let off the gas, and you'll get a very very high #... I'm in canada, so we go by Litres per 100KM ... so in our case, a lower # (of litres required to go 100 km) is better. So I let off the gas, and I get it to read "0L/100KM" ... imagine that! No gas required to travel 100km! Sweet! If I put it to the floor, the #'s can get pretty bloody high too.
And yeah, like JL said... avg is a good thing to check back on... I'm so poor, I try and set new "scores" ... lol, get my fuel economy as good as possible! My best so far is 9.4L/100km over about 2000 km. Right now I'm sitting at 10.0 even.

Think about it....
Your going 60mph floor it then let off the gas. Your now increasing speed but your engine is barely burning any fuel. The car thinks your fuel economy is skyrocketing. Once it reaches a certain point it figures it is not accurate and displays the --------.
