Grinding in the rear diff?
Hi All,
I noticed a couple days ago a slight grinding noise coming from the rear of my car. I know the rear brakes are getting down but I did not think they were that worn. Also, the sond mainly comes when taking a curve at more then 20 mph and it does not vary when brakes are applied. It sounds rotational so I am thinking if not braked then diff. Maybe it needs oil?
Sorry for going on so long
Thanks!

RE: Grinding in the rear diff?
ummm, check your pads
you could also replace your differential fluid (probably wouldn't hurt)
could be drivetrain related?
I would say get a lil dirty and try to get a better idea...maybe put the car up on jackstands and spin the rear wheels and try to get a noise out of them...
well, good luck!

Rear wheel bearing. They're a little weak. On the good side they don't just seize, it will just get louder until replaced. The noise difference between left or right turns with no change under braking is the flag.

Ok so i have been doing some reading and what i have gathered is that if it is a wheel bearing it would only make noise when I turn one way. this noise is going strait and gets worse when turing either direction

Wheel bearings can make noise going straight. Dont overlook the posiblilty that you have both rear wheel bearings bad, with one making noise turning one way and the other making noise going the other. I would also check the fluid level of the rear diff thou. It could just be low on fluid. Only way to really know where the noise is coming from is to put it on a lift and listen to where the noise is coming from.

the wheel bearing will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 if you have a shop do it, i think, dont quote me on that... but if you do it yourself, it will be cheaper obv, and you are going to want to do it soon, because the longer you drive on it, the more of a pain it will be to remove the old one.
