The first day i drove my 98 1.8t 5 spd on the highway, i was doing 80 at around 3300 rev, and i wanted to up shift, but there were no gears left! Now I really don't liek the idea of cruising at 3300 rpm for long periods of time (the occaisional redline trip is another story), but i also cringe at the solution, which is doing 65. Anyone else notice this? I could probably put a taller 4th and 5th gear in it, but that would lots of time and money.

haha, and in the manul it says you should be in 5th gear at 37mph(conserve fuel)lol, apparently they forgot germany had an autobahn, and some people liek doing more than 60mph for long periods of time.

when i go on the penn turnpike (my daily commute) i stay in 4th until i'm up to 100mph, if u want more gears and speed save for an S4

Abt tuning sells upgraded-longer- 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears. I'm sure they won't be cheap, but the only other alternative is a tranny swap with either the 2.8 tranny, S4 6-speed, or the older RS2 6-speed.

It won't be cheap, but if you really want taller gears....

ha! no, that is perfectly acceptable...my 1.8T tranny is at about 3500-3700rpm in 5th gear at 80mph.
