Hello everyone,

I have a 2002 A4 and the most of the time the gas gauge is not working. When I first noticed this was about mid march, I turn the car on it stays at empty, but the miles to next fill up seem to read correct so I turned the car off and back on and it work again. So i just thought it was a once in a blue moon type thing. Well in the past few weeks the gauge is acting crazy not reading at all and the computer is messed up saying zero miles of fuel left. But I just filled up the night before and there not 17 gals of gas in the drive way. The only way I seem to be able to get the gauge to work is when the car is moving turn it off and back on ... I don’t recommend that but it’s one way I get it to work also if it seems to be at different levels of fuel it will work. I was thinking of replacing the sending unit in the tank. Wondering if any of you experienced people out there know of anything else to try, or could it be something else.

If someone did the JL recall to replace the fuel pump they might have accidentially broke the sender while putting the fuel pump back in. (happens somewhat frequently)

 

I got the car with 99K miles on it so I have no idea if it was changed or not. I guess I could call a dealer and see if it was serviced right?

 

If it were done at that dealer yes, give them the VIN and they should know. Although the one sender next to the fuel pump is probably the problem anyway.

 

ECS Tuning has (Fuel Tank Sending Unit ES#2292) Is this the unit you are referining to that would need to be replaced?
