you don't need to remove the fan justrotate it till the bolt comes out, now try being on my side of the pond explaining it

did you look at the picture the bolt goes right up against the solid metal part. Rotating the fan will do absolutly nothing

What year is your car? I just looked at the data for the 2001 and it does instruct you to remove the fan.

Actually it tells you to remove it for teh 99 and 2000 as well so it's not specific to the AWM.

thats what I did and it broke the alternator. The alternator is out already now I need to figure out how to get the bolt out and then back in.

Secure viscous clutch with 5 x 60 mm bolt and remove mounting bolt for viscous clutch.
Tightening torque: 45 Nm (33 ft lb)
Remove viscous clutch.

the data I gave is for the 2001 and the idea is to wiggle the alternator till the bolt comes out and goes in, wiggle I suppose is a better word ( the fan doesnt need to come out ) but it makes it easier if it does and doubles the work
