Fan stays on...

Fan stays on...
1999 A4 Quattro 2.8, bone stock. The other day my wife came home from work and the electric fan stayed on. She said something to me about it, but when I went out to the garage I didn't hear it. Next morning, dead battery. when I put the charger on it, the fan comes on.
I've done a search looking for reasons, perhaps the coolant sensor or a stuck relay. I was looking for a short term, quick fix that would let her drive it until I had time to diagnose and fix it right or get it to someboy to fix it right. I can't find a fuse for it; I can't find a relay for it, so I disconnected power from the electric fan. When I hooked the battery back up, the electric fan didn't come on (obviously,) but some other fan/blower below and towards the passenger side of the car was running.
So my questions are:
What is the second blower/fan running?
What would cause both of them to run?
Can I readily disable them both?
Where is the relay for this/these?
Any imput or ideas?
Thanks guys

RE: Fan stays on...
the secondary fan acts to cool when the air conditioner is on,but is also controlled by the sensor so first, turn off your AC and see if that helps.
the fuse for this is under the driver's side lower dash. The lower dash is held in place by about 4-5 screws underneath with another screw under the main fuse box cover and removes in about 2 minutes. There are a number of relays under the lower dash, and, i believe a large orange 40 amp fuse for the fan.
The only other electric fan is the blower fan for the heater. Turn the heater off. This should not be running once the car is off.
