Default Engine knock

I think the audi needs some maintainence shortly... it's been progressively getting louder and louder, but ONLY when i drive my car hard and i then stop and let it idle, i hear a loud knocking or tinging noise coming from the engine towards the firewall. I drive my car ALOT and need it for work... any ideas on what this could be?

Also, when i am driving and accelerate... as i pass 2600 rpms i hear a very light and soft whoosh noise come from under the engine bay. It doesn't do it at any other rpms. Any ideas? THANKS!

It is an '01 1.8TQ 5-Speed. No mods. Just plain stock. When I baby the car, it doesnt make any noticable loud noises at idle... but after getting on it, it definitely sounds a but rough when it comes back down to idle. Not to mention, when i rev the motor up to 900 rpms the noise goes away completely. And I'm not sure if KNOCKING is the exact word to describe it... it more so sounds like a diesel motor.

Doesn't sound like knocking. Sounds like lifter noise.

I have the same problem and the dealership diagnosed it as cam shaft tensioner. I had them do it and the noise disappeared plus my car seems to be running a lot better.
The tensioner is around CDN$700 and the install is about 5 hours.

It is mildly too early to say whether this worked or not... but I picked up some Oil Detergent and Fuel Injector cleaner last night, and then drove my car pretty hard afterwards, and there was "diesel" noise afterward while it idled.... LETS HOPE THIS WORKS! I don't want to drop a few hondo on a cam shaft tensioner!

ORIGINAL: CRAZYHAWK

When my tensioner went bad at 25K mi. ,I had a CEL.
I had a CEL as well and that was the reasons why I took it to the dealer. I just couldn't figure out why I am running lean and I noticed that the noise tends to get louder and louder. My VAG COM indicates running lean and it was the same problem I had when the hose was leaking before. I replaced most of the vacuum hoses and still have CEL. The dealer checked it and said it was the MAF. I just don't understand why i never got any symptoms that points to a MAF issue.
Why would CEL kicks in when your tensioner is malfunctioning?

There is a TDC sensor on the crankshaft and camshaft. If they are not in sync, you get a CEL. A loose timing belt can cause this.

My audi is doing the same...I have a 2000 a4 1.8TQ tip...

Ive been told it was lifters...or the common audi sludge problem causing the lifters to do so...

I wouldnt put any additives in b/c its not suppose to be good for our engines...plus cheap quick fixes never work...

Im thinking about looking into the camshaft b/c thats what it sounds like will solve it..
