ecu removal
ok. i'm making plans for the tip chip. call the local installer (just outside atlanta) for a quote and its $500. $300 for chip, $75 for soldering, $105 for 1&1/2hr labor to pull/replace the ecu, rest is tax. so, i'm confused cause we're always seeing here $350. so i call jacksonville giac installer and he won't do it. actually said to mail it to the guy in atlanta. so, i go to mapquest and i'm under 2 miles from this place by back roads, so i figure i can pull the ecu, bike there, and save $100+ cause i have time and can do small, little, clean repairs in my complex. anyone have any thoughts. agree, disagree. other chip options i've missed. etc. thanks
oh yeah, how hard is it to pull the ecu since they're all charging 1&1/2 hr? (dealer did for other chip)

RE: ecu removal
then why do they say to ship just the ecu? that's what the jacksonville guy said. pull it and send to atlanta (thinking i was in jax). that's what all these people in the middle of nowhere do. i've been lucky living w/in 5 miles of 2 installers. theres less than 100 of these in the country.
curious, not trying to come across harsh.

Dave just doesn't care for mods at all.
Pulling the ecm isn't hard, you can see the ecm box at the top right corner of your engine bay, there are about 6 T30 torx bolts holding it down. Take them out and sneak the box out of there (you may have to pull up the cowl a little bit) Disconnect the harness and run with it, just try not to directly touch the pins on the ECM too much, static electricity can damage it, but they are pretty tough.

RE: ecu removal
am i to be so concerned w/static charges that i should wear rubber gloves? if that's the case, i'll shift the order of my work and pay the $100 wait a couple months. since alot of what i have planned is for long term piece of mind, i'll let them deal w/potentially frying my car's brain.
