Downshift: 2nd to 1st

RE: Downshift: 2nd to 1st
I don't think you guys are experiencing a 'problem'
but when you're rolling like that try tapping the gas to match the rpm your engine would be at if you were in first...
same thing you'd do when you down shift from other gears.. match rpms...
you'll see that if you match the rpm right, it'll pop right into first...
hope this helps

also i heard that it is done to stop u from going into 1st to soon and it will hold it there until the speed drops enough. I had this on my mustang and tahts what i thought it was for.

Yeah but that would be retarded... if it forces you to use 2nd gear, and then lugs in 2nd... that doesnt make sense.
And matching the revs doesnt help... it wont let you go into first when the clutch is depressed... so revs shouldnt matter anyhow.
I think i'll be changing my snub mount, when I do my t-belt this summer.

It's got 47k miles, so I doubt they have been changed. I'll get my friend to change the snub mounts too when I take it to his VW shop for the timing belt when I hit 60k. I was driving it some more and realized that once I get under about 20mph, if I pull it back towards 2nd and then to 1st, it will go in sometimes. It could be a 'feature'.

actually, i have experienced it when the rpm's go bak to idol staus.
once they get aroudn 1grand, then i can slip it in when i want. wheather im goin 20 or 80 mph
granted, im not gonna try to shift from 5th to 1st on the freeway, but i'v cluched in on the freeway, and been able to get into gear once the rpm's drop to idoll
just my 2 cents

dont think u should be in first unless ur at a complete stop, its not good to shift into first for any other reason. if ur rolling, hold down ur clutch in 2nd, tap the gas, and let off the clutch very very slowly. dont go into first unless ur at a stand still, theres no reason to be in first...

dude, just try it, with your clutch depressed, gently tap the gas while giving your **** a lil push to first.
if the rpm is right, it'll pop in. It's called double clutching... and i'm sure what people are saying is right, about it being a safety feature and all...
also be careful when you engage the clutch again, try to match rpm....
if you don't know about double clutching and downshifting techniques, i suggest you hit the books and practice those first...

if im lazy, i just downshift to 1st to slow me down, but thas when im going like 7 mph
everyone i know who drives stick never goes into first, even at lights they just 2nd gear roll...only time they use first is on hills...
