dipstick funnel

dipstick funnel
Well, it seems if I am in good company. My low oil light came on yesterday so I got a quart to add. Pulled on the dipstick and the funnel broke in half. Searched this forum and found a link for an <$6 replacement part, will probably end up ordering two as this seems to be an issue. It looks like an easy fix but it is hard to tell in the dark and there is no room to work down there. (Preaching to the choir! I know.)
Questions: how does the bottom of the funnel connect to the rest of the system? Is there a clamp or something?
What would happen if I ran it as is? with the dipstick in but no boot/funnel around it? the common sense (no mechanical skills) says that it would spew oil all over the place and fry the engine.
Looking foreword to some great advice!
