I had this same problem is the state of VA. It is not that there is no OBD2 to read, it is the obd emission test equipment does not properly connect. The tech told me the same thing he told you.... so.....I spoke to my dealer about this. It is a problem they see every day. The local/crappyemission stations forget to updat their software. For some unknow reason, audi is one of the cars in VA that does not read on an old version of software. They told me to contact the state or try another station.

The test machine that does not work on all the Audi A4's is called ESP and the software version is 0518. Check the shop and ask if they have a Snap on or SPX machine. This was the advice i got from the state of VA. I am actually going to take my car to a place with a snap on machine. i am going tom after work.
