Default cracked turbo?

i was just wondering has anyone ever cracked a turbo, like from shutting off the motor after hard driving in the winter. I know that it is best to run the engine until it cools down first but i am wondering how easily a turbo cracks and at what out door temps i should worry about this.

its unlikl;ey that it will happen one time. but dont run ur car hard then kill it. over time, it will do lots of damage to your turbo. and you will not be happy. it can eventually crack it, but most likley, what will happen is the inside will coool down slower, like the bearing and such, then it can leak oil becuase it gets fxed up. basically, let it cool. it pays off in the long run

more then likely if you do that your oil lines get caked up... invest in a turbo timer

Here's what was explained to me regarding your question...

If you shut your car down after heavy driving w/o allowing the turbo to cool adequately, you run the risk of burning/caking oil that's sitting in the turbo's oil galleys. These hardened chunks of oil can then be sucked into areas like your oil return line and create a blockage. This can pooch your turbo in a hurry. As the Viking stated, invest in a turbo-timer.

And im assuming that the caking part is true all year round not just in the cold.

correct. the stressing from teh turbo warping is more in winter, but defanitly year round. there is no doubt even if the oil doesnt clot, that your turbo will wear fast and warp eventually doing damage. its the same reason if you put ice water in a hot glass, it cracks. it is just glass cracks easier

its the oil coking that you gotta worry about, not really the turbo cracking..... manifolds crack easily and would probaly go way before the turbo actually cracks
