Control Arms?
How can i tell if my control arms are bad? I have heard about the service recall on them, and when i start the car and turn the wheel i hear creaking, but only for about 10 seconds then its gone. what can i do to check? thanks

RE: Control Arms?
if it's more of a whining sound that is your power steering pump...let the car idle for a few seconds before you turn the wheel to let the fluid get flowing...to check your control arms just press down on each corner of your car and listen for a squeaking sound (brrman has an excellent way of describing it: like two balloons rubbing together)

Another way you can tell if your control arms are bad is when you go over smaller bumps and such goin like between 5-15 mph..you'll hear a rattle. Generally it's a control arm. I just had 2 of mine replaced but the ones that are recalled are ONLY the FRONT LOWER control arms.

RE: Control Arms?
yeah the recall is a bit of a joke...
before you buy any parts from the dealer, be aware that meyle makes kits, that go on ebay for 500USD... for all 10 pieces. The dealer wants double that, I believe.
If it's happening when you turn, and its a "creaking" (clickling???) that could be a CV joint, but it wouldnt/shouldnt go away.

RE: Control Arms?
I would guess a wheel bearing first. Sounds like it's happening at lower speeds.
Or possibly very slight pad/rotor contact that makes a quiet squeak at really low speeds. Especially after being sitting for a while.

RE: Control Arms?
Steve suggested some good possibilities.
Push down on the fender of the car to compress the suspension.
If it creaks it is either the control arms or the tie rod ends. No doubt.
And you should only hear the clicking of a CV joint if you are moving while turning.
