RE: Clunky Gearbox
Hey msaunders I know what you talking about with the second and first gear. Mine does the same thing then after 2nd the rest are fine. Will a new snub mount and trans oil fix this problem or atleast help it?

RE: Clunky Gearbox
i posted a similar thread about my Sticky First Gear. it's pretty much exactly what your going through. dont know about the snub mounts, but i think the trans oil (gear lube will fix this). did you see that recent post about the Gear Lube Study? AMSOIL is that gangster huh? i was about to go with Redline MT-90, but i may decide to go with AMSOIL Severe gear lube. although it's like 12 bucks a qt.

Hi
No it can happen at any time really . And yes I know you have to completely stop to put it into 1st . Its not really bad , but its just enough to be noticeable . I think I will try the Redline if I can get my hands on some . I am in Ireland so I am not familiar with that brand over here.

does this happen to be in the morning only in your first couple 1 to 2 gear shifts?....most are clanky when cold.
and you have to completely stop the put it into 1st

Do not put an addative in the tranny fluid. Waste of time and won't help.
Best (most recommended on Audi forums) gearbox oils are Redline MT-90 (what I used) and the stuff from Royal Purple that is the same weight -75W-90 - (or the fluid bought directly from your Audi dealer). You can't buy either at Autozone etc. I ordered mine from a race shop on the internet.
Yes, all of the Audis say that the oil is good for a lifetime (which is why its a closed system that is hard to get to). To paraphrase a good post I read here before: The oil is good for the lifetime of the gearbox, but the lifetime of your gearbox will be much longer if you change that stuff out every once in awhile.
I have this problem too. Its subtle. My mechanic thinks I'm nuts because he doesn't feel it. Mine happens from 1st through 5th but most noticable in the lower gears and much more noticable as the temperature drops. This summer I rarely noticed it. With the cold weather on its way, it will happen every day. Def better once the car warms up.
If you want to change your gearbox oil yourself, look up the procedure first and get your tools ready. Some models require a special tool to get into the case. Its way to expensive at like $25. I will sell you mine for $15 if anyone is interested. Also, there is no fill from the top, you need to drain the oil and then PUMP new oil in. This requires some type of manual hand pump. Forget where I got mine (internet), but I wouldn't recommend it anyway because the oil was too thick for it and it was a pain to pump it through.
BTW, don't get your hopes up that simply changing the fluid will fix it. I changed it out but the problem is still there. It does help for some guys, but don't expect it to be a complete fix.
