clicking in first gear? help....
Lately I have been noticing a clicking sound only in first gear. When I start out in first as I get going the clicking gets louder and faster, then as I slow down still in first it the clicking is slower. In second gear its smooth as ice, as with every other gear. Just 1st seems to sound bad.
Also 1st to 2nd shifts are smooth if that matters, could it be I just need a new 1st gear or whole trans or what?
I need a clutch soon too so maybe I will get it all done right.
Any help would be great, thanks
p.s. its a 98 2.8 QM if that matters

RE: clicking in first gear? help....
I had a similar problem with my 97 A4 Quattro, manual. The cicking noise only occurred while upshifting and downshifting. Once higher RPMs were reached, the clicking ceased. The clicking got worse over time. The issue was a bad drive shaft. The drive shaft is made of carbon fiber and the entire shaft had to be repaired (actually re-milled). I hope this is not your problem. New drive shafts are about $1100. Re-milled is about $350-$400. Remanufactured drive shafts for my car were in short supply, so my old drive shaft was sent out and a new one was milled from it. It took about four days from start to finish to repair.

RE: clicking in first gear? help....
Noise in first gear is most likely caused by damage teeth on first gear. Parts can get expensive as first gear is part of the input shaft. Labor to disassmeble and reassembly the trans will vary but most likely wont be cheap.

Parts & Labor
For a new drive shaft it was about $1200-$1400. I did not go that route.
I had mine refurbished. The part was about $400. Total bill was about $600. The down side was that the repair took four days. One day to remove & ship to California, one day to refurbish, one day to ship back to Nashville, one day to re-install.
These prices were Nashville, Tennessee prices.
Also, I noticed the clicking was worse when turning and accelerating from a stop.

Where to get your driveshaft refurbished

I am not endorsing either of these. I did a google search and remember looking at them for information. Ask your mechanic, too. He may know someone or be aware of a machine shop with whom to do business.
FYI, the Audi driveshaft is a "hot" drive shaft; not many spare driveshafts out there, thus the refurbishing.
Good luck.
