after takingf the sensor out and inspecting it it has 2 smallgrooves or lines on the end of it are those suppose to be there? then i cleaned and reinstalled it only for it to be worse now something is grinding when the wheel is turned

i also hear a noise when the abs starts to act up, its coming from the engine bay. i'm assuming its the control module, i refuse to believe its gone bad because the abs and brake light came on after i changed my axle

There is a heat or dirt shield on the outside of the brake that is probably the grinding... I did my axles and had those rubbing. The Abs light is your wheel sensors... did you take them out before removing the axles (because you are supposed to). My sensors are smooth but my car is a 97 and I know the newer ones have a little bit different of a system to hold them in place. Anyway, the wheel sensors are really sensitive to postion and have to be firmly all the way in. I am hoping the grooves aren't from the axle scarring it, those sensors are 160 bucks a piece.

i have 97 a4 also, i'm still searching like crazy to try to narrow this down before it goes to the dealership tommorrow for ball joint recalls. from what i been reading the abs coming on right before i come to a complete stop is probably the sensor, but i have know idea where the grindind is coming from

I am totally experienced with this, I have done the axles twice on my A6.
The grinding is the shield right behind your disc brakes. if you barely even touch them they get pushed into the discs and rub the discs while the wheel turns. Audi will fix it for you while they are replacing your ball joints though for free, I mean all you gotta do is pull back on them and they come back out... it is barely any clearance on them.
97 A4, the wheel sensors just need to be seated in far enough. There is no retainer except good old friction, so you really got to push the sensor in all the way. Right at the end it should feel like a little kind of pop... Like the sensor is just a little bit to big and it finally came out of the tube. I think there is a little lip or pressure point that the sensor passes over.
^ I swear it. The ABS system will detect the fault between 0 and 5 mph and turn on the ABS and brake light I have seen it on my car several times. It is always braking right before I stop... and the pedal will pulse a little before they come on. Trust me, either you broke the sensors or you did not get them seated in the holder.
