I wouldn't even waste your time putting on the new belt... you heard a "scratching" sound... me thinks that was the pinging of your valves getting acquainted with your pistons.
I'd take the head off, if you can confirm that the belt did indeed break.

So What should I look out for, regarding damage to the engine?? I realize the the exhaust valves could be bent, but is my Cylinder head in danger too?? What all do I need to look out for??

And just to add.. It looks like the belt didn't exactly snap, but the teeth wore on alot of the belt. The belt is still intact, but it will not exactly work if that makes sense. I figured that this could possibly be better news than a complete snap or break in the belt.

you should always fit a new belt to see if it had valve impact also you can do a compression test, chances are you stuffed 6 valves though and good luck

Sounds like your TB tensioner broke(more common than the belt snaping). The tesioner is the reason people say to do the TB job every 70k. when the belt skipped it might have sheered off a few teeth.

Valve damage is caused by the piston hitting them - which in turn scar's up the piston - the valves then hit the cyclinder head.

Right after I did my TB I went to my local shop and they guy says "hey wanna see what could have happened if you didn't do this" well he had a volvo in there, bent 18 of 24 valves scared a couple pistons and the head needed to be redone. total cost $4k
