you don't have to prove they work upon the sale of the vehicle, however if the purchaser of the vehicle can prove you were the one who removed them, you could possibly have a VERY large lawsuit on your hands. Its not worth the risk. Plus (usually) if they are missing or there is a malfunction, an AirBag warning light will come on, unless someone had removed the bulb from the cluster (and I've seen this at dealerships in the Seattle area!). Although, it would be one hell of a sales pitch to show the customer how good the airbags worked by crashing it.

 

possibly now that's the prominent word, so you in all honesty couldn't sell the car with guaranteed working airbags ( same as the UK so not a legal requirement )

Yeah, i don't believe it is a law for Private Party sales, but I do know in Washington State, it is illegal for a dealer to sell a car with malfunctioning (or missing) airbags.

 

I wouldn't like to fight that one in the court damaged or missing would be different because there would be no defence unless a contract was entered into for a sale with repair, strange laws

 

only a guess because I don't know the law in the USA
