Bye Bye 3.0 6MT Sedan - Hello 1.8T Tip Avant
I'm trading in my 03' A4 3.0 car tomorrow night for an 03' Avant 1.8T. The 3.0 is a 6MT and the 1.8T is a Tip. I have mixed emotions. My 3.0 gave me 32k of trouble free miles. I'm hoping I am as lucky with this 1.8T. I've been lurking and reading about various problems people have with the K03's and Tip problems some guys are having. Time will tell.
I know one of the first things I plan on doing to the Avant is having the trans fluid changed. My Audi service advisor at my dealer says not to under any circumstances. He says that the metal deposits from the transmission internals that wear off are suspended in the fluid and act as a friction material. He insists that if I change the fluid the transmission will start slipping. I just don't buy it. I'm old school as far as automatic transmissions go. You drop the fluid every 30k to 50k miles and replace the filter and fluid.
I'm also reading that chipping a B6 Tip car is a no-no. Apparently something about the transmission hunting all over the place looking for the right gear to be in when the boost kicks in. I just talked to Chris Gigon at APR today though and he said that the Tip cars will take a chip just fine. The jury is still out on this. I hope I can do this. I don't want to have to live with 170hp. This car is heavy and it's a slug after driving my 3.0.

All ofthe Avants I looked at with manualswere more than I want to spend. I found this one owner car with 71k on the clock for $14,500.00. It's a clean little car, clean Carfax. A smoker owned it, but no cigarette burns anywhere, and the dealership did new ashtray, and detailed the sh*t out of it. You can't tell anyone smoked in it ever. I'm going to chip it, drop it with the H&R 1.7" kit and do Bilstiens all around it.
It's a commuter car. I drive 95 miles a day for work. I just wanted something that I could put in drive and forget about shifting unless I felt like it.

seems like you downgraded........ but enjoy the car I guess. If your 95 mile trip a day was on the highway, I don't see any reason why you wanted to trade in your perfectly good 3.0 It's not like you are stop and go on the tollway.

The 3.0 has 83k on it. It's a very nice car, but I wanted something better on gas. Plus I wanted the versatility of the wagon. I already have a sedan (S4) and a coupe (TT). This makes sense for my needs. I don't mind that it's not a rocket ship. I already have two of those.

That is quite the downgrade. 3.0 6speed quattro. Ohh man thank god i'm gettin the 2.8 i'd get myself arrested with that 6 speed on that powerful engine. Just more gears to redline. Good luck with ur avant.

I picked the Avant up this evening. It is a great little car. No, it's not a 3.0, but I have a TT that is pumped up and a S4. I don't lack for fast cars. This little car drives really nicely and will save more than a few pennies on gas. That's all the more important these days.
