Do at least two things. First, run a CarFax report on both. Then, check Consumer Reports. With the mods already done to the B5, add a couple thousand to the price of the 2002 and you'll be a little closer to comparing apples to apples.

Shouldnt even be much of a choice. The 2000 has already been modified and therefore driven hard. I know I would not mod a car to drive like grandma. The 02 has basically just been broken in and is still under a warranty. B6 no questions asked. If the B5 had 30K unmodded I would say take that. You just need to really think about buying a car that has been slighty modded. It will be cheaper to add the mods than to pay for the wear on a modified car.

This is kind ofnuts... Surfing through some previous posts trying to learn a little more about some of the mods on my car I ran across this post.

I ended up buying the 2000 this guy was talking about with about700 more miles and some spider webs over a year later for $11K.

Apparently it sat in a warehouse for the better part of the year.

Seems to run well and I love driving it. I'm going to change all of the fluids this week, any other suggestions on a car that appears to have sat for the better part of the past 13-14 months?

Congrats. Only suggestion I have is that you change the word "break" to "brake" in your signature. Unless your pads are really broken......

2000 is the worst year. No big port head, still ko3, dbw, and still controlled by a narrowband o2. If its not a 97-99.5 B5, its not worth getting. Go with the '02 and mod it your way.

The guy that brought this thread back from the dead bought the car that the original thread starter was thinking about buying.

Cincy, if youre not into modding, a 00/01 B5 is not bad. Its got the face lift, no ICM, more reliable coil packs, updated timing belt tensioner, more convenience features, etc. But if you bought to mod, I totoally agree. I wish I had known these thing before I bought my ATW.

In addition to all fluids, I'd say replace the belts & hoses. Take it easy at first and keep a real close eye on those tires.

No need to replace belts unless they are cracked or frayed. No need to replace hoses unless youre leaking something.... About the tires; I agree.

I had some respect for you, but damn where are u gettin ur info from? Belts decay over time, regaurdless of if the car is used or not, they lose the oils and become brittle, not always visible to the naked eye. Theres a reason to haveing a time and mileage listed on most cars for the service intervals of belts and hoses. A hose can look fine on the outside, on the inside its melted and a day from bursting. It's called preventive maintence.
