Default buttons on steering wheel?

new to me, 1999 A4 Avant Quattro 2.8
my three spoke steering wheel has two vertically oriented buttons on it. They're on both sides of the audi logo on the airbag cover. They both have a + and - sign on them. What do they do?

I've read that in '01 the tiptronic controls were introduced on the steering wheel. but this is a '99.

Thanks-
